A warrior who fell in the line of duty because he answered the call without fear or hesitation

Officer Michael Crawshaw was shot and killed from ambush while responding to a disturbance call at a residence on Johnston Road in Penn Hills, on Sunday, December 6, 2009. Officer Crawshaw was the first officer to arrive on the scene and was in the process of parking several houses away when he was ambushed and shot in his patrol car by a male suspect armed with a semi-automatic assault rifle, who had also just shot and killed another man inside the Johnston Road residence.

A homicide detective testified in the preliminary hearing that 32-year-old suspect Ronald Robinson confessed to shooting 32-year-old Penn Hills Officer Michael Crawshaw, and 40-year-old Danyal Morton on Dec. 6.

Detective Lawrence Carpico stated that Robinson told his mother about the shootings and that she told police what he said. Carpico stated that Robinson confessed after police played him a recording of her statement.

Police say Robinson, of Pittsburgh, shot Morton over a $500 drug debt. Crawshaw was the first to respond to the 911 call and police say Robinson shot Crawshaw as he waited for backup.

Robinson was wearing an electronic monitoring house arrest device on his ankle and was under supervision by the state parole board when the shooting occurred.

Officer Crawshaw had served with the Penn Hills Police Department for 2.5 years. He had previously served with the University of Pittsburgh Police Department.
